Is Nina Dobrev A Liar?
Hmmn. I liked the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries TV show but I just read a couple of interviews which give me pause about Nina Dobrev, the lead female star of the show.
In an Entertainment Weekly interview Nina Dobrev brags about how great she was during her audition:
Question: How did you get involved? You auditioned?
“Yes, I did. I moved to LA to do the whole pilot-season thing for the first time this year and my first audition was Vampire Diaries. So it kind of worked out. I read the script, and I thought it was great, and I went in. Firstly, I met Julie [Plec] and Kevin in the audition and they liked me but then I had to go back to Toronto for a couple weeks to shoot a movie called Chloe, and in that time, they were doing all the screen tests and doing all that crazy stuff, so they asked me to put myself on tape, and my tape beat out the other people that were there in person.”
But here’s what Kevin Williamson, the producer of the show said about her audition in a BuzzSugar interview:
“But Nina [Dobrev, who plays Elena] – Nina came in for us one day to audition. She was sick, she had the flu, worst audition ever. We didn’t even look at her a second time. And she went home, went back to Canada, and she was just miserable. She’s like, “I was sick, I was just awful, I can do better than that.” So she put herself on videotape and she sent that tape through and we put it in and we were like, “Who’s that?” “Oh, she came in and auditioned.” “No, she didn’t.” “Oh, the sick girl?” She was a totally different girl, totally.”
Who’s telling the truth here? Nina acts like she was “asked” to videotape her audition but the producer says they wrote her off based on her in-person audition until they got her videotape, which it sounds like they DID NOT ask her to submit.
And then there’s this comment from Nina:
“I read the Twilight books before the movie and the whole craze happened. And then I loved it. I was in love with Edward before every other girl that says she’s in love with him was. Because I read them a long time ago shooting a movie in Salt Lake City, and one of Stephenie Meyer’s friends said, ‘Make sure you read my friend’s book.’ And I read it, and I was like, ‘This is actually really great.’ And then it turned into what it is now.”
Uh, I hate to tell you this Nina but MILLIONS of people read the Twilight books before the movie came out. It was because of the popularity of the books that the first movie was filmed. Also, what’s up with implying that you read the books before everyone else? The books came out in 2005, a whopping 4 years ago. Ego much, Nina?
And lastly, there’s this statement, where she brags about hanging out with the cast of True Blood. Notice that she really only mentions the actual name of one of the stars.
And I am a fan of the vampire shows, especially True Blood. I’m obsessed with it. I got to meet the entire cast at Comic-Con and hang out with them. And that was awesome. I basically died and went to heaven.
Did they give you advice?
Yeah, actually. They were really, really awesome. Michael [McMillian], the guy who plays the preacher [Steve Newland], we talked for a long time, and we had the same agent, so that was the start of our conversation. And he was telling me, ‘You should read the rest of the books. I know that Kevin told you not to read the rest, but it’s something that’s out of respect to the fans of the book. At least read them, get a feel for it, and then you have a respect for that, and then you can go from there.’ That’s what he did. He read all the True Blood books. And then you can really get a feel for it and decide how much you want to deviate, how much you want to stay the course. They were so cool…we ended up talking and hanging out for a lot of the night at the EW party. And because of that, we really got to know each other, a lot of us. I know obviously because we all have vampire themes in our shows, we’re going to be constantly running into each other. And now we know each other. It’s kind of fun.
Okay, so she hung out with the True Blood cast but only mentions something said by the guy who starred as Steve Newlin? Come on. You know she’d be name dropping like crazy if she’d really hung out with the main stars from the show.
Please don’t think I’m a hater – I thought she did a good job during the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries. However as a young actress she needs to tone down the “self-admirable” comments.

I watch this show with my wife. Its a pretty typical teenie bopper cw show but isn’t so bad. I don’t mind Nina as her character is pretty much a post for the script to lean on and not really meant to be dynamic despite the script often being about her….that’s a good thing. She memorizes her lines but beyond that she has zero range as an actress. She’s horrible and cringe worthy. She should look into method acting. For example; to appear sad, she can remember how sad her anorexia used to make her feel. Anyone defending her acting is pretty damn blind or immature.,
Hilarious and true. Nina Dobrev’s wooden acting is part of what scared me away, despite hoping for a vampire show to tide me over between seasons of True Blood.

1st: We don’t know if either Nina or Kevin is the “lair” or if there was just a misunderstanding. You don’t know how the audition process works, and you weren’t there for the audition, so how would you know/why would you care?
2nd: Of course there’s a little bit of exaggeration here. People talk like this all the time. The “craze” is referring to is the sudden surge of twilight propaganda in the media since filming was first announced. “I was in love with Edward before every other girl that says she’s in love with him was” supports this implication.
3rd: She was spotted with the TB cast at comic-con, so yes, they did technically “hang out”. The second question was if any of them offered advice and Michael was the one to do it. Of course, just because she only mentioned Michael, doesn’t mean that no one else offered advice.

I sucked in the audition but got the part anyway? A lot of people got into Twilight after the movies and when it became a mainstream phenomenon. She is just pointing out that she read the books before it turned into a mass craze. She was not bragging about anything and I did not sense an egotistical tone. She was just pointing out how she was acquainted with the True Blood cast and how one actor gave her advice. Why do you think she was bragging about everything? You are being catty and sound like an overcritical, jealous loser. Celebs mention other celebs all of the time. Quit being so antagonistic towards Nina Dobrev. haha. I actually watch Vampire Diaries, mainly for Ian Somerhalder. Nina Dobrev is a HORRIBLE actress. Overrated. She’s a pretty girl but she can’t carry her weight as the lead of the show. When she goes into Katherine mode, it’s even more laughable.
Well, to be fair to her, most of the cast is pretty wooden when it comes to acting. But Nina’s lack of talent is more obvious as the show focuses on her.
How I wish that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) would just kill that whole teenybopper town and move on to his own adventures.

i’m not a troll or jealous hater by any means, but i have to agree with sabrinafairs. nina is an extremely awful actress. on vampire diaries she’s bearable to a certain extent, but i’ve watched her in a few other projects and her weak acting skills really show through.
she’s up there with kristen stewart, however, i’d take kristen any day (either though i can’t stand twilight) over nina, she comes across as more real.
i find nina buys into the whole fame side of her job, a bit ditzy and fame whorish – i feel terrible for saying that, but it’s just my opinion!
I agree. She’s super lifeless and dull, and unbearable to watch. She can’t support the other actors and actresses, and would be better suited in another profession. Let someone do the job that knows what they’re doing. Stop being a fame whore and take some lessons so no one else has to suffer through another hour of your horrible acting.

I think your being pretty unfair to nina. From one side, I’ll admit this did look a bit bigheaded BUT if you actually read the rest of the interview then you’d see that nina was just being honest about her audition, she wasn’t making excuses. She talks about how much she admires the rest of the cast and other people in true blood. Would an egotistical person do that? Shes not a liar. OK so what that your friend’s claim that Nina lied. What celeb out there doesn’t or hasn’t lied about something before. It’s very immature to bash her like this. In an interview she said she wishes someone would make her character happy so she doesn’t seem dull. Nina Dobrev is a liar. If people would accept the truth and try to examine the evidence…they would not love or defend her and Ian so much. If people read any criticism, they just get labeled a hater, a bitter Bonnie fan, or a jealous Paul fan or whatever. Such bs. Nina and Ian is who you should be criticizing.
Nina flat out lied and said she would never date co-stars and has never dated one in a couple of interviews. She dated a co-star from Degrassi, American Mall, and has been dating Ian Somerhalder for nearly two years. They flaunt their relationship and want fans to speculate with their obvious behavior, public sightings, and tweets but then they try to pretend they are private and classy. This is all just white-washing to cover up the fact that they began an affair when he was still with his girlfriend Meghan Auld back in season one. Now they are being more open because Delena will happen in Season 3.
Instead, their rabid fangirls live in denial even though it is they who brought attention to Nian’s dynamic with the abundance of photos and tell-tale signs. Then they flame anybody who points out the truth. Nina and Ian are both narcissts. So is Steven and Candice. They get to have illicit affairs but cover it up. It is gross how his fans are covering it up. Nian has even taken action on certain sites to make sure the mods prevent the truth or anybody commenting on his cheating to be banned or not be shown or censored.

Kristin Stweart is not a good actress…at least not in the Twilight movies. I saw a film called The Messengers (I think that’s the name…Horror film) from when she was a bit younger, and she did good in that.
But Nina Dobrev? Come on. I’m a Twilight hater and I would rather be surrounded by all thing Twilight than to see Nina Dobrev act. She’s horrible, lifeless, and dull.
Jealous of her skills? I don’t think anyone who knows anything about acting can honestly say they’d like to have her skills over someone else’s. Your article is spot on and Ian/Nina relationship comes off looking like a publicity stunt which won’t last long and if you criticize them on the boards you are considered haters even if you did use to ship DE yourself but even now it will turn you off of even wanting to see it on the TVD.

Um I just wanna say that I don’t really think she’s a good actress at all. She’s boring and lifeless, I’ve seen her on Degrassi and she was bad in that (and that show is very dramatic) she didn’t even act dramatic at all, just plain. I don’t think her fame will go anywhere after TVD.

Geez! Nina’s horrible. It made me choke on my popcorn seeing that bitch-slut act one of my favorite characters in the series when I saw the pilot. That girl just thrives to live off other People’s talents and her physical beauty (fine, I give her that) but it means nothing! I don’t see why beauty always gets wasted on the most pretentious, arrogant, immoral, people who don’t deserve it and manipulate it to their purposes. People, she’s using her little cover, her boy toy Ian, and this tweenie-bopper show as stepping stones to to get higher on the social ladder of fame! I’m disgusted that some people actually like her. She can’t act worth a cent. How she got that People’s Choice nom (and award!) is beyond me. Apparently, the guy thinks Nina’s voice soothes his pain (I can live with it) and Nina makes a bear with a voice recording of herself. I’ll refrain from noting this as bigheaded as this probably inflated her ego even more, but given the circumstances, perhaps her pea sized brain decided to care for another human being. Well, if her mom tweets about this, and she takes a pic of herself holding the bear, posts it online…then my only comment is that she wants is to know the ‘good’ that she did.
